Mission Statement
Providing dental students with clinical practice setting, comprehensive dental care experiences to further their dental knowledge, clinical skills and cultural competence. We strive to provide partnerships with diverse community-orientated dental clinics and healthcare systems to shape the future generations of dental care.
Hosting Students on External Rotations
- Dental students provide care to patients under the direction of a licensed dentist (preceptor) and are typically present for 1 to 3 weeks at external rotation sites.
- Your clinic decides the capacity for hosting dental students (typically 1 to 4 dental students) based on the number of preceptor dentists and clinic size.
- Our external rotation model involves relationships with dental clinics that are willing to host (a) dental student(s) in their final (D4) year of dental school.
Requirements for Hosting
We ask that all external rotation preceptors make the following considerations:
- Cost: There are no costs or fees required to host dental students.
- Housing: Housing must be provided for our students if the clinic is more than 50 miles from 不良研究所. Sites may consider housing two same-sex students per room When providing housing.
- Dental Assistant: We prefer that all students practice four-handed dentistry (with the aid of a dental assistant).
- Operatory: Students should have access to their own operatory to provide direct care to patients, with the oversight of a licensed dentist (preceptor).
Why it matters
The Externship Experience
Dental students gain a variety of positive experiences on outreach. Students learn to treat a diverse patient population and are exposed to diverse communities. Students also develop speed in procedures and basic practice management. Dental students often report that outreach is a highlight of their dental school experience.
