The following are roles assigned to advisors in CheckMarq.  All advisors have the same level of access to student records in CheckMarq regardless of role, although the role assigned in CheckMarq does determine the type of access granted to the advisor in MySuccess.  The role assigned to each advisor is also visible to students on their Advising tile in CheckMarq.

NOTE: All degree-seeking undergraduate students must have a Major Advisor assigned from their college.  Students in the College of Arts & Sciences who are part of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) may have an EOP advisor assignment in place of their Major Advisor during their first year.

Major Advisor

Faculty or staff advisor assigned based on a student's major. Responsible for academic advising related to course registration.  If also designated in CheckMarq as a student鈥檚 primary advisor, this advisor is responsible for the student鈥檚 progress towards degree (PTD).

Supporting Major Advisor

A professional/staff advisor assigned to a student who has moved on to a faculty advisor or faculty advisor assigned to backup or support major advisor(s).

Minor Advisor

An advisor assigned based on a student's minor.

Cohort Program Advisor

There are several cohort programs across campus that offer supplemental advising support to our students in these programs. These advisors are 鈥渟econdary鈥 to a student鈥檚 primary major advisor when one is assigned, although the cohort program advisors may operate as primary advisors for some students if a major advisor is not assigned. These cohort programs include:

Honors and EOP are also primary advising units, which means that they may be designated in CheckMarq as a student鈥檚 primary advisor. Primary advisors are responsible for a student鈥檚 progress towards degree (PTD).

Assigning Advisor Roles in CheckMarq

One of the following roles should be used for most individual advisor assignments for undergraduate students:

  • Major Advisor
    • All degree-seeking undergraduate students must have at least one major advisor assigned except for first-year EOP students in the College of Arts & Sciences.
  • Supporting Major Advisor
  • Minor Advisor

The following college-specific roles also may be used for individual advisor assignments:

  • C-Lead Advisor (College of Communication only)
  • Faculty Mentor (College of Engineering only)

All advising committees have an advising role that is specific to the committee, which should be used when making committee assignments.

See in the OTR Public OneNote notebook for additional instructions on assigning advisors in CheckMarq.
